"Fangsheng" releasing animals has been a very popular and collective religious practice among the Buddhists in Taiwan. To prevent people for killing them, Buddhists tend to buy the captive animals from market and then set them free. The ecological impact of animal releases is becoming a new social issue nowadays. However, although religion and conservation groups pay occasional attention to this behavior, there are nevertheless not enough empirical studies for further and complete exploration. Therefore, this integrated project intends to study the psychological and social motivations of this behavior (of saving) and how those motivations affect our ecology. Through the perspectives of ecology, sociology, psychology, and religion, this project examines the dimensions of individuals, groups, society and the environment. Before promoting education program and introducing attractive alternatives for protecting animals, we need to examine the relationship between compassion of animals and the practice of saving animal lives at the individual level, and the connection between the temples with conducting the releasing animal's ritual and their adherents. Understanding of these phenomena from academic perspectives can be done in variety of ways. By conducting the phone survey, this project intends to analyze the perceptions of animal releasing and related public policies in Taiwan.
