This study addresses three goals: (1) to longitudinally investigate the outcomes cross small community homes, group homes, and institutions for intellectually disabled (ID) residents; (2) to longitudinally assess the impact of out-of-home placement on residents’ families cross these residential settings; (3) to assess the staffs’ job satisfaction working in the residential settings with cross-sectional study.

250 adults with ID living in 18 small community homes, 8 group homes, and 19 institutions will be interviewed personally; as well as, an interview survey will be conducted for the residents’ families at their homes. Both of the residents and their families will be followed up three years. Furthermore, a delivery survey with standardized self-administered questionnaires will be managed to collect 2,099 staffs working in the residential settings in the first year of the study. The results of the three-year follow up, with three times of field interviews will indicate whether there will be long-term effects for the ID adults living in the small community homes, whether there will be long term and significant differences between the residents living in the small community homes versus group homes and institutions, and whether the family involvement and family quality of life will be diminished or promoted correlated with year of out-of-home placement increased. In addition, the factors associated with staff’s job satisfaction will be acknowledged. The implications for organizations, policies, and future research will be discussed.
