Marital resilience is a phenomenon often observed by Chinese family practitioner. However, scientific study of resilience in Chinese marriage does not receive enough attention over the decades. Most of Chinese marital research appears to adapt a patriarchy-dominant perspective, with the purpose of unveiling the suppression of women and emotion in marriage. Positive influences on marriages are rarely discussed. The purpose of this research is to use both qualitative and quantitative methods to study the formation and change of Chinese marital resilience.

In the first year, the researcher did a small-scale investigation to describe the general impression married people have about resilience. Qualitative interviews to 19 married people were then conducted, with the goal of understanding marital resilience as a process. A hypothetical theory about marital resilience was developed by the end of the first year.

Results of the study indicated that the formation and development of marital resilience is complex. It involves individual’s decisions to regress or progress, the give/take and Ren/not Ren changes in marital system. Personal beliefs under cultural influences also contribute to the explanation of marital resilience. In addition to that, Taiwanese couples seem to accommodate to situations rather than control them. They use three kinds of Ren (Repressive Ren, Receptive Ren, and Regulative Ren) in time of adversity.

In the second year, 722 married people were recruited as participants. SEM techniques were applied to test and modified the hypothesized models for male & female participants. Both models were verified after examining indexes such as GFI, AGFI, RMSEA, NFI, NNFI, CFI, IFI, and RFI. The formation of marital resilience was identified through one direct path and several indirect paths.
