The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of work value, gender role attitude, motherhood ideology and social support to the choices of work among single mothers and married mothers. The researcher used theoretical sampling from the list of elementary schools on Educational Statistics. To add the number of single mothers, we sampled from Taipei Women’s Center and Taipei City Day Care centers. Survey research using structured questionnaires was employed. 441 subjects were collected. 322 married mothers and 113 single mothers were included finally. Several human capital variables were different significantly between single mothers and married mothers. Single mothers were seen as less advantageous in many aspects. They were less educated and less salaried . Because some of the samples were collected from welfare institutions, there were more welfare recipients in single mothers. In addition, they are a little older than those of married mothers. As to the dimensions of the choices of work, the more one agreed on the concept of ‘child cared by other person’ and ‘the importance of work value,’ she would have more probability to enter into the labor market. Mothers who agreed the concept of ‘ domesticity affected work’ would have more likelihood to stay home, compared to those who did not agree. Mothers who had sufficient human capital would more probably choose to work. The findings indicated that there were no significant difference on the choices of work between single mothers and married mothers. It was diffenent with the stereotype of single mothers. However, these mothers made decisions pragmatically. More to the point, the salary, childcare and human capital aspect played important roles in the choices of work.
