1. Since the computer media got involved with the fine arts, design, and creation, the discussion and studies concerned had surged up. However, most of these studies focus on the sphere of design with professional creators as the primary subjects. By contrast, the studies on pupils’ creative activities by means of computer media are scarce. For the sake, this study probed into four objectives:(1) To contrast pupils’ expressional results when painting with computer media and traditional media.(2) To study the intension of expression forms when pupils use computer media materials and traditional ones to paint.(3)To compare and contrast the expression forms when pupils use computer media materials and traditional ones to paint.

To achieve these objectives above-mentioned, this study is conducted by means of pre-experimental counter-balanced designs, questionnaires, interviews, and laboratory observation, in order to understand pupils’ expressional forms, attitudes, and progress when using computer media and traditional media. The subjects of study were 65 fifth-graders, who carried out painting separately with traditional media and computer media. And the six research tools adopted in the study included “Self-Evaluation Sheet for Performing Painting Software,” “Works Grade Appraisal,” “Time Record,” “Attitude Questionnaire,” “Element Analysis Sheet,” and “Interview Record.”

The conclusions obtained are as follows. 1. An imaginative picture is freer and unconstrained in content and in theme, and its coordination with the functions, properties, and convenience of computer media enables the aesthetic expression of imaginative creations to be superior to that made with traditional media.

2. Whether computer media or traditional ones, pupils’ expression in painting will not affect their integrative aesthetic or grades of their paintings.

3. The properties of computer media may trigger pupils to give a try and think over all kinds of media.

4. Whether in depicting a concrete object or an imaginative thing, the computer media apparently seem to be a more convenient and efficient painting tool.

5. When using computer media and traditional media, pupils’ use of the art elements, such as lines, space, value, colors, shapes, and texture, may vary with the themes. The themes of imaginative pictures may be conductive to the computer media’s expression of art elements.

6. In terms of the expressional results, pupils have a preference for that made with traditional media; the preference for creations made with difference media and the inclination of judgment may be influenced by the categories of media.

7. Pupils consider positively the functions of a computer is diversified, versatile, easy to work with, changeable, amendable, colorful, and colorable, but it is frustrating for them to manipulate lines with a mouse.

8. Pupils have a sundry preference for traditional media and consider it is more amiable to manipulate paint brushes with their own hands, so that they can draw lines depending on their own feelings; however, the biggest problem they are confronted with is coloration.

9. Pupils may show different painting tactics to cater for the properties of the media they are using.

In accordance with the findings and conclusions obtained in this study, concrete advice and suggestion will be proposed aiming at art education and prospective studies for the reference of schools, teachers, and advanced academic researches.
