隨機效用模型常被用來刻劃消費者在商品、住宅、交通、及休閒之選擇行為。使用此類模型之主要理由為其處理替代產品之卓越性。然而,一旦對於攸關替代性之選擇集合設定錯誤,會導致參數估計及福利值之不一致。

文獻上對於選擇集合之研究可分為外生選擇集合及內生選擇集合兩大類。外生選擇集合乃因調查中並未蒐集選擇集合之資訊,而由研究者來定義消費者之選擇集 合。內生選擇集合則由消費者之資訊,來定義選擇集合。以往所有關於選擇集合之研究,乃基於兩項重要假設:其一是假設所有消費者對產品特質之偏好是相同的, 同時以隨機項來概括不被其模型所刻劃到之偏好差異性。其二是所有這些模型皆隱涵了獨立於無關選項之假設。然而此二假設不符實際。

因此本研究放寬此兩項重要假設之限制,亦即在容許消費者偏好差異性,以及容許選項間較以往這些研究更為豐富之替代性下,探討選擇集合定義對隨機效用模 型參數及福利值之影響。在選擇集合定義上包括:熟悉集合、全集合、以及距離所決定的選擇集合。在偏好差異性上包括:單一變量之異質性以及多重變量之異質 性。其目的是能更符合實際地刻劃消費者之選擇行為。

Random utility models are often used to model consumers’ choice behavior of commodity, house, transportation, and recreation. The main reason of using the random utility model is its great ability handling substitutes. Misspecification of the choice set, which is relevant to the substitutes, will bias the parameter and welfare estimates.

Literature about the choice set definition can be classified into two groups: the endogenous choice sets and the exogenous choice sets. The former defines the choice set by the researcher because of lack of the information about the consumers’ choice set, while the latter uses consumers’ information to define the choice sets. So far the researches are all based on two important assumptions. The first assumption is that all consumers have the same preference about the characteristics of the choices. The second assumption is the independent from irrelevant alternatives assumption. Neither is realistic.

Therefore, this study relaxes these two important assumptions. In other words, this study explores the impacts of the choice set definition toward the parameter and welfare estimates under heterogeneous preference and richer substitutability. The choice set definitions studied include the familiar set, the full set and the distance-based set. Single variant heterogeneous preference and multivariate heterogeneous preference are both studied. The purpose of this study is to model consumers’ discrete choice behavior more practically.
