This research is to examine problems faced by adolescents with IDDM, to understand the coping strategies used by them and factors influenced their use of certain strategies, and to explore their needs. The study focuses on the normative psychosocial and cognitive tasks of development interacted with the illness hardships experienced by adolescents. In addition, the roles of families and peers in influencing the coping skills of IDDM adolescents are also be examined. This research uses face-to-face interviews to collect data. The sample is comprised of 137 IDDM adolescents (aged 11-19) who are being treated in the hospitals located in the metropolitan area of Taipei. Multiple regressions are used to analyze data. The resutlts indicate that factors related to their use of certain strategies include life stress, perceived social stigma, higher self-efficacy, and the effect of IDDM on their interaction with peers (the strongest predictor). As for their service needs, most are related to their medical treatment, however, to teach others understand their illness and to listen to their inner world are also needs expressed by most respondents.
