The purpose of this study was to examine the contributions of perfectionism, achievement goals , and self - presentation on the prediction of pre-competition anxiety and performance. This study sampled 217 intercollegiate athletes ( males=132 ; females=84 ) with mean age of 21.58(SD=+2.08) who participated in the 2000 University Games of Taiwan. All subjects completed Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS, Frost & Henderson, 1991), Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ, Duda & Nicholls, 1989), and Self-Presentation in Sport Questionnaire (SPSQ, Wilson & Eklund,1998) a month ago before University Games. Then, a week, one day, and one hour prior to competition, all subjects completed Competition State Anxiety Scale-II (CSAI-II , Martens , Burton , Vealey , 1990) and recorded their performance after competition. By using descriptive , dependent ANOVA , correlational , and multiple regression analyses , this study found there were no differences on cognitive and somatic anxiety either one week one day or one hour before competition . However , one hour and one day prior to competition subjects\' confidence was higher than one week ago. Further, this study found social cognitive variables were more correlated with somatic and cognitive anxiety than confidence . Also, this study found perfectionism and self-presentation were the better predictors of the pre- competition anxiety than achievement goal orientations and perceived ability . Finally, due to the bad weather during competition, this study could not found any variable correlated with or predicted performance . This study concluded that though there were strong connections between social cognitive variables and pre- competition anxiety , however , environmental factors restrained any prediction of social cognitive variables and state anxiety on performance. This study discussed results and implications in terms of Lewin\'s (1952) field theory.
