This project aimed to explore the cultural generality or specificity in terms of the work stress process, using data from the three major Chinese societies, namely, the Mainland China (PRC) , Taiwan and Hong Kong. In addition, specific perceived influence at work and general control beliefs were also proposed as moderators in the work stress process , and their effects were examined in the cultural contexts. 740 employees in PRC (Shanghai), Taiwan and Hong Kong completed a battery of structured questionnaires. Results generally supported the work stress process model in all three societies. Being younger and junior , Hong Kong employees reported higher work stress and suffered worse strain effects. Further analyses showed that there were distinct haracteristics of the work stress process in each society, which were embedded in their political-socio-economic as well as organizational contexts. Specifically, \"Recognition\" was the focal concern for Taiwanese employees , \"Managerial role\" for PRC employees, and \"Workload\", \"Hassles\", \"Organizational climate\" for Hong Kong employees. In addition, for employees in Taiwan and Hong Kong , Chinese primary control beliefs buffered the detrimental effects of work stress on job satisfaction.
