1.The World Values Surveys

The World Values Survey (WVS) is the most acknowledged investigation of global and international social, cultural and political changes. As of 2007, at least 97 nations participated, covering the world’s 88% population. “Value\" is such an abstract concept. It does have distinct impacts on human behavior and policy decision-making. From a comparative analytical perspective, WVS does enable us to trace the change on values over time based on a common framework, which further helps to contrast and compare the similarity and differences on social changes across countries.

Therefore, this project aims to trace and measure value changes in Taiwan, and to compare with other countries. It also provides the academia the basis for further exploration on current situation and construction of theory. Taiwan has experienced l a number of significant political and economic events since last survey, such as the second party alternation, ease of cross-strait relations, and the financial crisis of 2007-08 and bottom out. Hence, it is worth paying further attention to and conducting longitudinal studies to see whether these events affect the value changes.

The study investigated on the values change of citizens aged between 18 and 85 residing in Taiwan via a face-to-face interview between June 23 and September 23, 2012. Based upon the probability proportional to size (PPS), 5267 people were randomly selected as a full sample. 1238 participants completed the survey as a success subsample with a 23.5% success rate. In order to make the sample better fit with the population structure, the survey data are weighted by raking method along with population distribution of sex, age, education, and area.
