This digital archive is created and supported by the “China Impact Study” thematic research team (CIS -TRT), Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. The CIS-TRT was formed in March, 2010 to advocate the study of various aspects of social change in the world that can be attributed to factors that are about the “rising China”. The current focal point is centered on China’s impacts on Taiwan. There have been growing discussions of China’s rising influences in international politics and world economy. Chinese government has actively portrayed herself being rising in peace. And yet when facing global dynamics and its national interests, she works hard to preserve her own strategic interests in a manner of realpolitik. Taiwan’s geographical proximity to China’s southern seaboard contributed to increased ties between the two. In recent years, the island came under China’s growing influence through cross-strait trades and cultural exchanges. Chinese government considers the unification with Taiwan one of its “national core interests”, a position that is not shared by Taiwan’s major political parties and people. On the other hand, with heightened cross-strait economic and socio-cultural interactions, Taiwan’s economic dependence on China escalates. Given the trend pushing Taiwan for greater integration and resistances against the trend, what are the impacts of China on Taiwan’s political, economic, social and cultural developments? Concentrating on the relevant issues, the CIS-TRT will continue carrying out pertinent survey studies which will provide public access to important social data.
