Social capital has become a significant research enterprise around the world. Its theoretical basis is the understanding that access to and mobilization of resources embedded in social relations and social networks have considerable impacts on the life chances and well-being of individuals as well as social groups. Research programs have been carried out in North America, Europe, and East Asia, including Taiwan, which have demonstrated that social capital, to a significant extent, impacts occupational mobility, community solidarity, social inequality, individual well-being, and social and political participation. Yet, much is to be learned. For example, (1) how do we integrate the multiple perspectives conceived and employed in studies of social capital? (2) what are the key sources of social capital? (3) what is the relationship between access to and mobilization of social capital? and (4) what are the returns to social capital? Further, how can these relationships not only be specified but be tested for possible mutual causations or reciprocal effects? These questions represent some of the cutting-edge issues. Systematic and comparative investigations, in different economic, political and social regimes, and with a panel design, will be essential and advantageous in providing clues and answers. The research program intends to address these key issues. It calls for a two-wave three-site survey, to be conducted in Taiwan, mainland China, and the United States. The three sites are selected to capture two different political regimes (state socialism in mainland China and capitalism in Taiwan and the US) and two cultural institutions (Chinese in Taiwan and mainland China and Anglo-Saxon in the US). A panel design allows some preliminary tests of alternative causal and reciprocal effect (see below Program Strength: Causal and Reciprocal Effects – the Panel Design). The research model (1) specifies components of social capital and their inter-relationships, (2) endogenizes social capital to identify its sources, (3) distinguishes access to and mobilization of social capital, and (4) examines types of returns to social capital. The sub-projects will each investigate one or more of these key components and collectively will contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge on social capital in a systematic and comparative framework.
