This research proposes to study the social life of Puer tea in an attempt to reveal the culture of consumption and the historical processes embedded within its life history. An in-depth research into the life history of Puer tea allows us to explore various important issues, including:“consumption and hierarchy in Chinese society,”“spheres of exchange , value systems and moral economy ,“tea and China's minorities,” “China's frontiers and the central government,”and“modes of production and the globalization of Puer tea consumption.”I will adopt Appadurai's concept of“the social life of things”as a basic framework for interpreting the complicated political, economic and cultural processes embedded within the history of an item of everyday life in Chinese culture. This project focuses on three particular areas of research: (1) the emergence and construct1on of tea-drinking as a cultural category in Chinese history, and the role played by Puer tea; (2) the sensuous cultural aspects of various styles of consuming Puer tea, such as that represented by the Qing imperial family, and by today's“antique”style of drinking Puer tea; and (3) the distribution of Puer-tea consumption from the perspective of globalization. I plan to gather historical data and conduct fieldwork in Yunnan, Hong Kong , and Taiwan. The results should contribute to studies of Chinese tea culture, globalization of Chinese culture, and the issue of consumption and senses.
